Image Authors Lynch EM, Groocock LM, Borek W, Sawin KE Summary Microtubule nucleation by the gamma-tubulin complex is critical for cellular organisation in all eukaryotic cells. In this work, Lynch et al. construct a “minimal” version of the fission yeast Mto1/2 complex, “Mto1/2[bonsai]”, and use this to show that Mto1/2 can activate microtubule nucleation by the gamma-tubulin complex independently of localization to conventional microtubule-organising centers. High-resolution microscopy indicates that Mto1/2 multimers drive multimerisation of the gamma-tubulin small complex into active microtubule nucleation complexes.
