On March 1st, Gerard Pieper, Lucy Munro, and MSc student Elizabeth Torres Arce from the Marston lab joined Maria Fanourgiaki (PE team) to take the IVF glass art to the Future of Reproductive Health meeting at the Royal College of Surgeons. We wanted to take the glass art out of the cupboard and engage with the clinical and discovery scientists attending the meeting about the public engagement art & science project that led to their creation, and the research and experiences that inspired them. We received a lot of great comments about the project, with many researchers stating they wish they had taken part in the glass workshop, too!

The glass art pieces we showcased have been created as part of the ScotPEN Wellcome Engagement Award (SWEA) funded project ‘New horizons in fertility research: Why do some eggs not work?’. The Edinburgh based artist David Mola created the glass artwork after interviewing people that have gone through the IVF process, and talking with researchers from the University of Warwick (McAinsh lab) and WCB (Marston Lab). Then, researchers from the McAinsh and Marston lab took part in a workshop run by David in Edinburgh, where they made their own glass art tiles inspired by their research. We now look forward to taking the glass art out on the road to engage with our local community.
