Colourful ‘Prader-Willi Superheroes’ exhibition proves popular at the International Prader Willi Syndrome Organisation (IPWSO) Conference. Image Members of the Tollervey lab have recently returned from a successful trip to Limerick where they attended the International Prader Willi Syndrome Organisation (IPWSO) Conference to launch their ‘Prader-Willi Superheroes’ exhibition. The colourful exhibition, funded by a ScotPEN Wellcome Engagement Award, was co-produced by the lab team - whose research links to PWS - along with families with PWS, comic book artist Neil Bratchpiece and model maker Joanne Fullarton. The aim of the artworks was to showcase the superhero level strengths, skills and talents of people with PWS, and to empower them to tell their stories through comic-book style images and 3D models. Image The exhibition was extremely well received by conference delegates, which included people with PWS and their families / carers, as well researchers and clinicians. As well as discussing the artworks, lab members Ola Helwak and Alexandra Lehmann presented a poster on their research, and took part in model making and drawing workshops with children and adults with PWS. The centre’s public engagement team then immediately whisked the exhibition up to Belfast, where it was equally well received at the B.I.G event, a meeting of science engagement practitioners. The forthcoming ‘Prader-Willi Superheroes’ comic book will elaborate on the stories told in the exhibition and further outline the link between centre research and the condition.
