Hear from Rahul who is studying MSc Bioinformatics. Name Rahul D Programme MSc Bioinformatics Year of Graduation On track to graduate in 2026 The opportunity to learn from leading researchers, engage in interdisciplinary projects, and be part of a vibrant academic community made it the perfect place to pursue my MSc - not to mention the beauty of the city, which makes studying here even more special. What has been your favourite part of being a student in Biological Sciences so far? My favourite part of being a Biological Sciences student has been how strongly the programme focuses on building practical, transferable skills. A real highlight for me is knowing that everything we are learning now - from data analysis to critical thinking - will be directly applied during our dissertation project and will continue to be valuable throughout our future careers. It makes the learning feel purposeful and closely connected to real research. What does a typical day look like for you? My day usually starts with lectures in the morning, which go on till the afternoon. After classes, I head to the gym, and once back home, I go through the day’s lectures to consolidate my learning. The best days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays when we have the breakfast club*; it’s a great way to connect with peers.Academic life in Biological Sciences is engaging and well structured. Classes are interactive and encourage active participation, while the labs are well organised and supported, making it easy to navigate new techniques and equipment. I usually prepare for tutorials by reviewing lecture material in advance, paying close attention during lectures, and then consolidating my understanding by making notes once I get home.In my free time, I like to stay active by going to the gym and exploring the city whenever I get the chance. I also enjoy spending time with friends and taking part in informal academic discussions. While I’m not currently part of a sports club, I find that balancing my studies with staying active and exploring Edinburgh with friends works really well for me.*During Semester time in the 2025-26 academic year, the Student Support Team are running a weekly Breakfast club. Students get a free breakfast and can connect with other students and staff who have also come along. Have you done any internships, work experience or research placements during your studies? I’m really looking forward to my dissertation project starting in May, which will give me the chance to apply all the skills I’ve been developing so far. While I haven’t done any formal internships yet, the programme provides plenty of opportunities to gain hands-on experience through projects and research-led learning, which I find incredibly valuable. Where are you living during your studies? I stay in University student accommodation, which I really enjoy. Living with flatmates from different countries is amazing because it gives me the chance to try dishes from all over the world and learn about different cultures—it makes everyday life so much more fun and enriching!Postgraduate accommodation | University of Edinburgh Why did you choose Edinburgh?
