Our Strategic Research Themes

Biology underpins sustainable solutions to many of the challenges facing our planet.

Our planet is facing unprecedented threats to its long-term sustainability: climate change and its impacts on food security; the emergence and spread of new infections; a growing, and ageing, population with complex healthcare needs; ever-growing demand for more sustainable sources of feed, fuel and consumable goods.

Our School, one of the largest communities of biological researchers in the UK, is bringing together its diverse strengths to tackle global challenges and reveal the fundamental biological principles that govern life on our planet.

Cell dividing

By pioneering fundamental bioscience discoveries, we reveal the foundational principles that govern life.

Biological systems (i.e. organisms, populations, ecosystems) are continuously exposed to the ever changing environment and must respond with resilience to survive.

Biological systems are continuously at risk of serious infectious diseases, while modern lifestyles and an ageing population contribute to increases in non-communicable diseases.

A secure future for our planet requires equitable, inclusive and sustainable approaches to society’s most pressing problems.
