Research and Innovation

Gujarat Biotechnology University's (GBU) faculty were recruited with a view of their skills in basic and translational research for Biotechnology.

Their research activities fit into the three following themes:

Sustainable Food Systems

The Sustainable Food Systems theme focuses on the understanding that natural food production (e.g. agriculture, livestock husbandry, fisheries, etc.) occurs within the context of the surrounding ecosystems.

The insight that the performance of any component in a food system is an emergent property of its interaction with its environment, informs the design and pursuit of appropriate approaches for research and translational outcomes.

Circular Economy through Biology

The Circular Economy through Biology theme focuses on the understanding that biology knows no waste that cannot be re-used.

GBU researchers active in this area focus on either the development of processes that can:

  • reverse the damage done by the linear, extractive economy
  • and/or upcycle those resources
  • the development of processes that are designed to yield products and by-products that can be used in other processes such that circularity of material fluxes can be attained

People-centric medicine

The People-centric medicine theme focuses on the healthy life span of individuals within a population and their interactions.

This combines elements of population health and wellbeing with the development of curative and palliative approaches for individuals.

While molecules with agonist/antagonist function (e.g. drugs and biologics) play an important role in people-centric medicine, they are part of solutions, not the solution.

GBU researchers aim, and the institution is being set up for, delivery to focus equally on discovery, and translational science going all the way to collaborations with industry and start-ups and spin-outs to deliver solutions.

GBU colleagues are keen to collaborate on all aspects of this trajectory including with UoE colleagues with complementary interests and skills.
