Accessing sensitive data remotely from home or public machines

When accessing sensitive data stored on the University network from home or public machines it is important to do this securely

The following points will help ensure security: -

  • Consider using a VPN, particular if you are using wireless in a public place - public wireless points are often less secure than that those at home or within the University
  • When using a machine you do not manage (e.g. internet cafe): -
    • Remember that downloaded data may be cached locally and may remain after you have finished using the machine
    • Remember that your DICE/EASE password may be captured if the machine has been compromised.
  • It is a good idea to use separate user accounts
    • Please run antivirus

Using remote desktop

Remote Desktop requires a fast Internet connection e.g. Broadband or Cable. Using Remote Desktop will ensure sensitive data is not stored on a home or public computer.
