Internal Seed Funding and Support for Meetings / Partnering 

Pre-announcement of Internal funding opportunity: Scottish Government SEPAL University of Edinburgh Policy Fellowships

Launching in mid to late May, offers researchers in the College of Science and Engineering the opportunity to apply their scientific expertise to a practical policy challenge within environment, natural resources and agriculture.

The Edinburgh Earth Initiative (EEI) is now accepting proposals for Earth Fellows research projects for the ‘24/’25 academic year

These can be research project related to climate and environment that is suitable for a postgraduate or PhD student to work on for 9 hours a week for 9 months. EEI will cover the employment costs of the student for successful projects. Any questions about the Earth Fellows programme please email earth@ed.ac.uk.

Universitas 21: Health Sciences Group - funding opportunities for all research stages

HSG offers staff and research students a range of funding options for collaborative projects. Projects should be interdisciplinary, involving multiple health themes, working in partnership with at least three member universities (of which Edinburgh is one), across at least two countries.

UNA Europa Seed Funding 

Supports academics from our 11 partner universities to pursue a collaborative research, education or outreach project with counterparts across the alliance. Open to all disciplines and career stages, the Una Europa Seed Funding Call 2024 is your chance to secure up €39k to embark on a new collaboration and accelerate your academic career. New UoE seed fund launched with Cornell University

Edinburgh Global is offering a third round of competitive grants in collaboration with Cornell University. Proposals must include a PI at both UoE and Cornell and can be from any discipline. Successful proposals will receive up to $5,000/£4,000 from each university.

Una Europa Starter Funds

Funding (up to €10k) to support the initiation of collaborative activities in any disciplines between partner universities and Freie Universitat Berlin.

BioEquip, SBS equipment funding scheme

The SBS BioEquip funding scheme exists to provide funding for equipment at the School. It aims to provide an organised objective process that enables acquisition of equipment that benefits a broad number of users and would otherwise be difficult to fund. Colleagues wishing School financial support for acquisition of equipment, either directly or through matched funding on a grant, should apply for funding through this scheme.

Rice University Seed Fund

To jump-start high-impact, cross-institutional collaborations across a range of research areas. The focus of current research discussions between Edinburgh and Rice includes energy, robotics, healthcare, and space and satellites but we welcome quality applications from all disciplines. Each successful proposal may receive up to £15,000/$20,000 from each university for a total of £30,000/$40,000. Big Ideas Accelerator Fund

The Big Ideas Accelerator Fund is here to support and catalyse radical, interdisciplinary collaborations within the University community, that wouldn’t be funded by other means. Once again opening its doors on 14 February 2024, this internal seed-funding scheme aims to fuel innovative and disruptive projects that transcend traditional boundaries.

SBS Seed Funding **PI MUST be from SBS**

To fund high risk, "big ideas" to enable development and increase the potential for success of future external funding applications. Collaborations within SBS/across schools/colleges welcome, but lead PI must be from SBS. Proposals may be for workshops to spur collaboration and idea generation.

Moray Endowment Fund

Annual competition to support original research in any discipline with up to £2k. Can be used for pump-priming, topping-up, equipment or travelling expenses.
