Denise Affleck wins the Edinburgh Technician Award

Denise Affleck has won The University of Edinburgh's 2025 Technicians Award for Contribution to Infrastructure and Facilities.

For staff in the Michael Swann Building who have ever had media prepared or glassware washed, chances are Denise was behind it.

For more than 20 years she has been the backbone of the Michael Swann Media and Wash-up Facility, and now that dedication has been recognised with the Edinburgh Technician Award 2025.

Denise joined the Swann in 2004 and gradually became the go-to person for media production. Over the years, she has quietly ensured that hundreds of students and researchers could focus on their science, confident that essential services were in expert hands.

This past year highlighted her commitment. Despite staff shortages, Denise handled media preparation for over 220 researchers, while keeping wash-up operations running smoothly and double- or triple-checking orders to prevent costly mistakes.

Overwhelmed, I couldn’t believe it. To be shortlisted was amazing, but to actually win… I was chuffed! Everyone’s congratulations, even big hugs from students, researchers, meant so much. My granddaughter even texted me. It’s been wonderful.

With retirement approaching, Denise is now passing on her knowledge to other staff, teaching with patience to ensure the facility is in safe hands.

As she prepares to step into retirement, Denise leaves behind not only an impressive legacy of service but also the respect and affection of everyone who has worked alongside her.

The Swann Building will feel her absence, but her impact will continue for years to come. Below are just a small selection of comments from her colleagues:

Denise has been absolutely essential for my project, providing litres and litres of food for my bacteria. Always quick and helpful, and always patient with my mistakes. Couldn’t do without her!

If it wasn't for Denise's hard work, making sure that we have enough media every week, our laboratory would simply stop running.

I have worked with Denise for a very long time, it's always a pleasure to see her cheery face around the corridors of the Swann Building! She is ever helpful and always strives to provide us with the best possible service. I was thrilled to hear that she got the award, it is very well deserved!

Denise took me under her wing and trained me in every aspect of the service room. We became friends as well as colleagues. I’m so pleased her hard work has been recognised.
