The School of Biological Sciences have contributed to the Royal Society of Biology’s ‘Biology Impacting Lives’ programme, producing a video that showcases how our research is leading the way towards creating a healthier and more sustainable world. The video features interviews that explore the ‘New Darwin’ project and our new research themes. The Royal Society of Biology and ITN Productions Industry News co-produced the news and current affairs-style programme to report on advances in biological sciences and the crucial impact they have on our everyday lives - as part of the Society's 10th anniversary celebrations. New Darwin The School’s £100m investment through the ‘New Darwin’ project will not only provide a state-of-the-art research and teaching complex but forms a vital part of our mission to tackle global challenges. Climate change, the emergence of new infections, the resurgence of disease once thought conquered, a growing population and the need for more sustainable ways to produce food, fuel and materials are just a few of these challenges. Advances in biological research are essential if we are to understand how our world will respond to those challenges and form the basis for innovative solutions. The ambitious expansion through the ‘New Darwin’ project will help to harness world-class research, modern technologies and new ways of working to address these threats. The investment will make the School a powerhouse of biological research and innovation in the UK, bringing together scientists from different disciplines - biologists, mathematicians, physicists, engineers - to come up with solutions to global problems. It will build on Schools’ diverse expertise – already home to over 135 research groups with interests across cell biology, plant sciences, infection and immunity, evolution, drug discovery and biotechnology. Biology Impacting Lives Programme 'Biology Impacting Lives' provides a platform for outstanding stories of scientific development and impact taking place in universities, industry and in the field – research that impacts the food we buy and eat, the medicines we take, the crops we grow and the healthcare we rely on. Presented by Natasha Kaplinsky, the programme not only celebrates recent achievements in biology but illustrates the breadth of roles and areas of interest within the sector.
