QuestionMark Perception is a centrally supported online testing system at Edinburgh University. One of the third-year courses in this School decided to explore the potentials of the system in the 2011-2012 academic year. The project was funded by the Principal's Teaching Award Scheme. The project was aimed to provide the students on the course open access to online self-testing quizzes throughout the course. As the course was taught in blocks based on different topics. The sets of quizzes were designed around the topics and each was released once the topic had been covered. The quizzes were not only accessible through web browsers on a computer, but web browsers on a mobile phone, or the QuestionMark Perception apps on smartphones. They were so deliberately designed to be short tests so that students could try a test even if they only had a few minutes' spare time. The following image is an example a multiple choice question from one of the quizzes. Students can answer one question at a time and the system will auto-save the students' input. However, the system will not record the test score unless the student presses the 'submit' button. Image Students can check feedback to the questions they have submitted wrong answers, which is aimed at giving them guidance on understanding the problems.
