The eMarking Project

The eMarking Project was funded by the Principal's Teaching Award Scheme, which enabled the School to purchase 20 tablet PC laptops and develop bespoke software components to allow academics to mark student assignments electronically.

The project aimed to emulate the pen-and-paper marking model on the computer screen, but at the same time help academics go through piles of student work without the tedious paper shuffling. The hardware involved are tablet laptops with A4-sized touch screens, stylus pens for writing on the screen and mic and earphone headsets, while the software needed are custom-coded Excel and Word macros and the screen capture software 'Camtasia'. These technologies allowed markers to mark not only student essays in Microsoft Word format, but also any other electronic formats. In addition, markers are able to give audio/video feedback as well as text-based annotations.

The School has been using eMarking for several courses at first-, second-, third- and postgraduate levels.
