This page contains information for MSc Data Science for Biology students Welcome message from Dr Simon TomlinsonWelcome to the first cohort of the MSc in Data Science for Biology, and to the School of Biological Sciences, we are looking forward to working with you.Studying for an MSc can be a very exciting time. You will have the opportunity to strengthen and expand your knowledge of a subject you are interested in and you will hopefully see your longer-term career plans coming into focus as you progress through the programme. The Data Science for Biology MSc consists of two components, the taught classes, worth 120 credits, and the research dissertation project, worth 60 credits. The basic idea is that you develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of data science during the taught component and then get to apply this knowledge in the research project. These projects take place within academic research labs, typically within the School of Biological Sciences. There is the opportunity to take projects within other parts of the University or even potentially within a commercial setting. All of this is designed to give you a detailed knowledge of data science, but you also learn how to use this to solve (real) biological problems. This all provides a great platform upon which you can build your future career. You will be based in The King’s Buildings campus of the University within the wonderful city of Edinburgh with all the social opportunities that provides. But remember you will have deadlines, examinations, and all sorts of other challenges during the year as well. You will need to work hard, but we are here to help you along your journey. You will be assigned a Student Adviser who can provide both pastoral and study guidance, as well as having access to me as your Programme Director, course teachers , the administration team and extensive College Support Services. Finally on behalf of everyone involved with the programme, I welcome you to Edinburgh and wish you every success in your studies here.Dr Simon TomlinsonMSc Programme Director Programme structure 2024/25The Degree Programme Table (DPT) lists the compulsory and optional courses for your programme.
