Information for students on our Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity programme. Programme Director's Welcome We are very excited to welcome you to Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity MSc. Here in Edinburgh we have great strength and depth in ecology and evolution and we recently established the Centre for Adapting to Changing Environments, bringing together over 100 research groups working on impacts of global change. The MSc courses will be taught primarily by members of the Institute of Ecology & Evolution, with additional lectures and courses taught by staff from the School of Geosciences, and Scotland’s Rural College. You will be taught through a combination of lectures workshops and discussion sessions, with an emphasis on providing opportunities to learn and apply state of the art methods to study the impacts of global change on ecology and evolution. Our teaching is able to draw on a great breadth of expertise and diversity of systems and approaches, from long-term studies of the impact of climate change on the Soay sheep on remote St Kilda to effects of ocean acidification on microbes in the lab. We’ve designed the courses to equip you with a portfolio of skills to prepare you for a breadth of career opportunities, whether that be starting a PhD, or jobs in conservation, policy or ecological consultancy. From May to August you will experience being a researcher in a world leading research group studying the impacts of global change. During your research project you will have the opportunity to enhance your skills in collecting and analysing data, and interpreting and communicating results. The MSc begins on September 9th with a field course on the beautiful Scottish island of Arran. This course will enable you to engage first-hand with the ecology of this region and the challenges it faces and will equip you with key sampling and surveying skills. It will also give you a chance to get to know your course mates and lecturers from the outset. We will be in touch with you with more information about the field course in the coming weeks. We look forward to seeing you in September. - Prof Ally Phillimore Programme Director for Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity MSc - Dr Guillaume Latombe Course organiser for Biodiversity under pressure and Professional skills Reading List Some suggested reading for students on the Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity programme Choosing Courses Find out about your optional course choices in Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity.
