Information for those on the Bioinformatics programme. Programme Director's Welcome Our MSc in Bioinformatics seeks to take full advantage of the University’s expertise, maximising your opportunity to study your chosen field. Biological researchers generate data on a vast scale using techniques such as high-throughput sequencing or proteomic analysis, to name but two. These data are fuelling discoveries in modern biology: our MSc will teach you, amongst other things, how to efficiently navigate, process and question your data in the best ways to test your hypotheses, get the answers to your biological questions. Graduates from our degree typically go on to do PhDs and lead research groups, take positions in major international bioinformatics companies, or use their newly acquired knowledge and skills to become entrepreneurs. Our goal is to help you reach your goals, whatever they might be, in the world of bioinformatics, or more generally, biology. At the moment, students from the 2023-2024 cohort are working away on their research projects. For most students, this is the most fun part of the whole year as the skills learned on the taught part of the MSc are applied to solve real-world research problems. The projects that the students undertake are very diverse in nature, and differ from year to year. It could be an academic or an industrial project, it could be writing a web interface to a huge biological database, or using machine learning approaches to identify relationships in data, or exploring a brand new single-cell gene expression dataset in a tropical parasite! We are immensely fortunate to have such an active, world class research community around us, all eager to have you in their lab for the project (and frequently, for a subsequent PhD project too!) If you have any further queries about the programme, the School or the city, please do not hesitate to contact me!
