Information for those on the Data Science for Biology programme. Programme Director's WelcomeModern biology generates vast amounts of data. Data sets are moving from the millions of data points to billions, and we increasingly use tools built using machine learning to discover new biology in data with this scale and complexity. Data science for Biology (DSB) is designed to take you on a journey through modern in silico biology. You will learn how to exploit complex data and make new biological discoveries. You will learn about the foundation principles of statistics, programming, and databases, as well as the application of machine learning approaches. Throughout the programme, there is a strong focus on applied practical analysis and you will learn how to interpret data in the context of advanced experimental approaches such as CRISPR, cellular lineage tracing or using genetic engineered cell lines. After the formal teaching part of the programme, you will get the chance to apply your skills on your own in silico research project hosted and supervised by an individual research laboratory based within the School, or the wider University. The DSB programme prepares you for biological PhD programmes, for working in a high-tech commercial setting and generally for working with complex data in academia or in industry. The MSc takes place over just one year, and it is expected that you will find the programme both challenging and rewarding. There is a lot to learn, and the academic level is a lot more advanced than for undergraduate programmes. Interdisciplinary science can be especially rewarding, and a lot of discovery happens at the interfaces between disciplines such as biology, computing or statistics. We work hard to get the balance just right in terms of workload and course content so you can reach advanced learning outcomes in a year without becoming overloaded. To achieve this Data Science for Biology is designed around a focused set of core courses, that work well together to deliver the data science teaching. This core programme also provides the platform for you then to take specialist MSc data science courses offered with Biological Sciences or by other schools within the University.Welcome to the programme!Best wishes Simon Tomlinson Programme Director (MSc Data Science for Biology) Reading List Some suggested reading for students on the Data Science for Biology programme.
