Changing Course or Group

How to make changes to your course choices or allocated groups.

Changing courses

Some of your courses will be compulsory and cannot be changed. Other courses for which are you enrolled will be optional courses that you have chosen, and it may be possible to amend your optional courses at the start of semester, if you have changed your mind.

Changing groups

Many classes, especially in the early years of an undergraduate degree, are divided into smaller groups for activities such as practicals, tutorials or workshops. You will be allocated to groups for these and you will see your groups on your timetable. You will sometimes complete group work during such classes, including working towards assesments, which means that changing group once the course has started may be restricted.

The BTO will run a process for collecting your course choices for the next academic year during the Spring. You will be invited to a 'Getting Ready for Next Year' session, which will be an in-person information session at which you will hear about the options for the next year and have an opportunity to ask questions. Written information and links to resources will be supplied to you via Learn.

Providing us with your optional course choices well in advance allows us to ensure that you are enrolled on those courses as early as possible, and to allow time for you to seek advice and help if you need help making decisions. We will also try to allocate you to groups early, so that your timetable is as complete as possible by the time semester starts.

If you change your mind about your optional courses, you can usually make changes either before semester starts, if you realise that you have changed your mind, or during the first two weeks of semester, if you start a course and realise it is not for you. Your Student Adviser can assist you with course changes.

  • You must ensure that if you are requesting to change a course, that you meet any pre-requisites for the new course and that you still meet the requirements for your degree programme.
  • You cannot change courses after the first two weeks of semester, since by then you would have missed too much to catch up on a new course and assessments may have begun.

If you find a clash on your timetable, or become aware that an alternative group on a course would work better for you than the one you have been allocated, you may be able to request a group change. Before completing a Group Change Request, please first ensure that you have collected the information you need (e.g. course code, details of the group you are in currently and the one you want to move to, which School owns the course).
