The School of Biological Sciences is committed to contributing to social responsibility and sustainability at the University of Edinburgh.

Sustainability Awards

The Sustainability Awards encourage and recognise the efforts of staff, students and departments to make our University more socially responsible and sustainable.

The School also supports the participation of various teams in the University Sustainability Awards.

Lab Awards

The Biology Teaching Organisation currently holds a Silver Lab Award, awarded to teams that meet a range of criteria across nine themes:

  • Fume cupboards and biosafety cabinets (BSCs)
  • Cold storage
  • Chemicals and gases
  • Scientific equipment
  • Water
  • Waste and recycling
  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC)
  • Lighting
  • Awareness and training

Office Awards

The Biology Teaching Organisation currently holds a Silver Lab Award and a Bronze Office Award, awarded to teams that meet a range of criteria across six themes:

  • Engagement and communications
  • Resource efficiency
  • Travel
  • Energy
  • Purchasing
  • Health and wellbeing
