Guidance on the penalties for late submission of coursework. Deadlines For each coursework assignment, you will be given a deadline for submission of the work. It is important that you submit your coursework by the deadlines stated. This is to enable staff to provide your marks and feedback to you in a timely manner. You should aim to submit coursework by the published deadline. There are penalties for late submission of work. Late submissions If you submit an assignment late, you are advised to discuss the circumstances with your Student Adviser. There may be study skills advice available to help you with time-management to prevent future late submissions. If you are required to submit a printed copy (most courses do not require hard copies but there are some exceptions, such as lab books), you should find out where to take your late work and ensure that it is dated and timestamped when you deliver it. If you are required to submit a digital copy, Learn and other online assessment systems will automatically time-stamp the late work. Penalties for late submission There is a 5% penalty per 24-hour period that the coursework is late, up to a maximum of seven days. For example, a provisional mark of 65% for an essay or other assignment would be reduced to 60% if submitted up to 24 hours after the deadline. Note that this includes weekends. Beyond seven days late, the mark given will be reduced to zero. Once the marks and feedback for an assignment have been provided to the class, late submissions will generally not be accepted. Extensions and Exceptional Circumstances While we hope that your studies will go smoothly, we recognise that sometimes you may be affected by circumstances beyond your control, such as illness. There are support systems and processes available to help, such as coursework extensions and exceptional circumstances applications. You should speak to your Student Adviser about these processes if you think you may need this support. If you know in advance that you will struggle to submit your coursework on time, due to a short-term difficulty, you may be able to apply for an extension. Not all coursework assignments allow extensions so you would need to check this. If you have already submitted the assessment, but did so late due to exceptional circumstances, you may be able to apply for the late penalty to be waived. Your Student Adviser can help you with this process. Exceptional Circumstances Service This article was published on 2024-06-17
