Development of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Information about Scholarship of Teaching and Learning within the School.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) refers to research and scholarly inquiry into student learning in Higher Education. It encourages us to critically examine educational practices, assessing the effectiveness of different strategies, and to share findings in a way that informs the academic community and improves student learning.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Committee

The School has a SoTL Committee whose mission is to connect, support and encourage SBS staff and students to take a scholarly approach to student learning.

The SoTL Committee actively supports SoTL activity for all interested School staff and students. Activities and information are provided through our Teaching Communities and Forums. 

Teaching Communities and Forums

The SoTL Committee supports the continuing professional development of teaching-staff, including but not limited to encouragement and support for gaining Adv HE Teaching Accreditation for which there is a dedicated SBS SoTL Community Teams channel. 

Teaching accreditation

The SoTL Committee also manages a SoTL development fund. Information and access to the fund is available through the SBS SoTL Community Teams site.

The teaching development funds can support  travel and fees for learning and teaching conferences, events or training or other means of developing or disseminating your teaching-related work.

The SoTL Committee has representatives within each Institute as well as student, post-doctoral, administrator, laboratory and learning technologist representatives.
