Introduction to DRP-HCB Internships

About DRP Internships

Depending on your interests you will work alongside experts in technologies including Proteomics, Bioinformatics, Cryo- EM/ET, Imaging, Protein Production and HTP-Cell Biology, to develop new methods and approaches to overcome barriers to current research.

Internships are available with DRP-HCB collaborators and our four Technology Cores.

  • Internships taken during an interruption to your PhD are for 12 weeks full time.
  • Internships taken after Thesis submission are for up to 16 weeks full time.

Candidates should be in the second or third year of their PhD, or expect to be submitting their PhD thesis before starting the Internship.

Due to visa restrictions the internships are currently limited to UK-based PhD students, but we will consider other routes to funding and hosting trainees from anywhere across the world, especially resource limited countries with little access to cutting edge technology. We are unable to cover visa costs or provide accurate advice on visa matters.

UK based PhD students currently on a student visa and applying to start the internship after submission of their thesis, must ensure there are no restrictions on their right to work and that the internship does not affect their student visa.

Before applying potential applicants should contact the DRP-HCB giving a brief summary of why you are interested in working with your chosen Technology Core, and the type of project that interests you. You will then be contacted by the the Core managers to discuss your application further.

You are advised to start planning your application 3 months before the application deadline.

  • All applications should be made using the online application form.
  • All applications must be submitted by the application deadline.
  • Only applications accompanied by 2 references will be considered.

Applications will be reviewed by the Intern Recruitment Committee and selected applicants will be invited for interview.

Funding

If the internship is started during an interruption to your PhD your student stipend will continue and you will not receive additional funding from the DRP. However, if your PhD is registered outside of Edinburgh, and you need to arrange accommodation you will be eligible to apply for funding to assist with accommodation and travel.

If the internship is started after thesis submission you will be employed by the University of Edinburgh on UE06.01, applications for additional funding to assist with accommodation will be accepted in exceptional circumstances.
