Prestigious BBSRC-NSF/BIO award builds on long term collaboration

Andrew Goryachev, Professor of Computational Cell Biology and a PI of the Centre for Engineering Biology, has received a prestigious BBSRC-NSF/BIO award to uncover principles of cytoskeletal regulation by means of synthetic biology.

He will spearhead the UK part of the long-term collaboration with the US partner, Prof. W. Bement, University of Wisconsin-Madison, to further advance the understanding of cellular organization using gigantic genetically rewired cells engineered from frog oocytes.

This award is the third in the series (2017-2021, 2022-2026, 2026-2030) of grants jointly awarded by the US National Science Foundation and the UKRI and signifies the recognition of the success of the approach developed by the collaborators.

In this phase, they will deploy synthetic proteins, optogenetics and biophysical modelling to study self-organization of cellular morphogenesis using artificial cell division furrow as the model of choice.
