Review Commons: a new platform to accelerate publication of peer reviewed science Review Commons is a peer review platform that offers expert evaluation of manuscripts and preprints before submission to a journal. It enables the rapid posting of the review process on the bioRxiv and medRxiv preprint servers. Manuscripts reviewed by Review Commons can furthermore be transferred to a consortium of 17 journals, including journals published by EMBO Press, PLOS, eLife, the Company of Biologists, ASCB and RUP, for editorial consideration without starting the peer review process anew. We will present data showing that Review Commons accelerates the dissemination of peer reviewed research and improves the efficiency of scientific publishing. The analysis of the fate of manuscripts submitted to Review Commons shows the virtual elimination of cycles of peer review. Refereed preprints are publicly posted at least 4-5 times faster than it takes to publish a paper by following a serial submission process in traditional journals. Survey showed that authors felt that Review Commons journal-agnostic reviews were fairer, more constructive, and more transparent than in traditional publishing. Several journals also reported that the acceptance rate of manuscripts received through Review Commons is higher than the one of normal submissions. Refereed preprints are thus poised to become a transformative tool moving scientific communication towards greater efficiency and transparency while maintaining scientific rigor. Refereed preprints provide scientists with faster access to peer reviewed research than conventional journal publishing, allowing them to build upon the work of others in an informed and timely manner. Furthermore, the availability of peer review outside of the context of a journal will enable broader cultural shifts in scientific publishing and research assessment by providing direct access to expert opinion as a substrate for evaluation.
