PhD student Olga is a PhD student on the Wellcome Trust Hosts, Pathogens and Global Health Programme. Her PhD project looks into the role of the RNA-binding protein Tex in the bacterial and host modulation during Burkholderia pseudomallei infection, focusing in particular on the macrophage infection. In her project, she combines the experiments in the avirulent Burkholderia thailandensis model with the work with B. pseudomallei in the CL3 laboratories at the Roslin Institute under the supervision of Dr Jo Stevens. Olga is co-supervised by Dr Tovah Shaw.Olga studied Biological Sciences with Immunology Hons at the University of Edinburgh. Her final year project in the Matthews lab focused on the quorum sensing in African Trypanosomes. After joining the HPGH PhD programme Olga did a rotation with Prof Tom Little, Prof Amy Pedersen and Dr Sarah Wolf looking at the stress in response to food availability and parasite burden in the wild wood mouse population (Apodemus sylvaticus) before joining the Moule lab for her PhD.Academic bio2019 – 2023: Biological Sciences (BSc Hons) with Immunology Hons, School of Biological Sciences, University of Edinburgh2021: Summer Epigenetics Internship at the Institute of Functional Epigenetics, Helmholtz Zentrum, Munich, Germany.Project: In vivo study of chromatin organisation in C. elegans; supervised by Dr Daphne Cabianca2022: Internship at the Epidemiology Research Group, Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh.
