MScR student Alex is currently completing an Infectious Diseases MScR at the University of Edinburgh within the Moule lab. Dr Madeline Moule and her students previously identified potential factors involved in the extrapulmonary dissemination of Burkholderia pseudomallei and had begun to characterise these using intracellular assays with Burkholderia thailandensis as a model. Alex’s project aims to build upon this work by developing a novel fluorescent Burkholderiaintracellular assay, completing the construction of a ΔvacJ mutant, and continuing the experiments to characterise the dissemination factors in Burkholderia thailandensis E264. Prior to this, Alex completed their Biomedical Science BSc (Hons) undergraduate degree at Edinburgh Napier University, graduating in 2025 with a first-class degree and was awarded the University Class Award as well as the Royal Society of Biology Top Student/Top Project Award. Additionally, Alex was awarded the Medical Research Scotland Summer Scholarship and undertook a 6-week research project at Edinburgh Napier University in 2024, where they investigated the antimicrobial properties of a novel compound against MRSA in vivo using Galleria mellonella and in vitro using THP-1 cells.
