Darwin Trust Conference and Advanced Course Grant

The purpose of this award is to help you prepare for your next career move.

You may apply to the Darwin Trust for funds to allow them to present their work at a conference, or to attend an advanced training course or workshop. A maximum of two awards will be made to a student during her/his PhD and the maximum amount that will be awarded is £2,000 in total.

You must apply for an award in advance of the event that you wish to attend using the “Conference and Advanced Course Grant Application” form that you can down load using the link below. You will be reimbursed after you have sent receipts for your expenses to the Darwin Trust administrator (darwin.trust@ed.ac.uk). All receipts must be legible and in English to enable the Trust to calculate and reimburse your expenses. The final decision on the amount to be reimbursed will be made by a member of the Darwin Trust Administration Committee.

Interruption of Studies for Maternity, Paternity, or Illness

Interruption of Studies for Maternity, Paternity, or Shared Parental Leave

You should notify the Darwin Trust office if you have been awarded an interruption of studies for parental leave. The conditions for parental leave are the same as those for a student holding a UKRI studentship. The Darwin Trust will then extend your studentship to the new end date for your period of study.

Interruption of Studies because of Illness

You should notify the Darwin Trust office if you have been awarded an interruption of studies because of illness. The maximum period that your stipend can be extended because of an interruption due to illness is 13 weeks in any one academic year, and 52 weeks in total.

Acknowledging Support from the Darwin Trust

As you know, you must acknowledge the support that you have received from the Darwin Trust whenever you present you work, whether orally, in a poster, or in a paper. We suggest that you use the following wording in a paper, but this may be varied if you think it appropriate:

“XXX was supported by a PhD studentship from the Darwin Trust of Edinburgh”
