Our mission is to provide unique insights into the biology of plants and to provide data-driven solutions to improve their health and performance. Projections for the coming decades estimate that the world’s population will continue to grow beyond sustainable levels, while we are also facing a climate change crisis. These global challenges are not easily solved, but plant and crop science will play a pivotal role in addressing these real-world problems. Tackling Global Challenges Our 16 research groups work in three overlapping areas of plant biology to tackle global challenges: Food security Climate change Green technology Resilient plant health in changing environments Image Improving plant health and performance in the face of climate change and emerging threats from diseases is vital to securing future food supplies. With underpinning frontier bioscience research and the development of new technologies, we have the opportunity to understand and optimise plant growth, development, stress resilience and yields. Read more Evolution, diversification and biodiversity of plants Image By studying living and extinct species, biogeography, and the genomics underpinning different plant shapes, we uncover the evolutionary pathways of plant diversification and breath of plant biodiversity. Not only is this important for ecosystem conservation, but also for understanding past trajectories that can help predict how future environmental changes will affect plants. Read more Green factories for high value products Image Plants are a rich and largely unexplored resource for high value products that have medicinal properties, improve the nutritional content of food, or provide renewable alternatives to current energy sources. Read more Sustainable Development Goals Our research addresses many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including: zero hunger, good health and well-being, clean water, responsible food production, climate action, and protecting life on land.
