Project title
Engineering of methacrylate esters producing strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
About Juro
Juro Oravec is an undergraduate Biotechnology student at the University of Edinburgh. As a part of his Honours project, Juro is attempting to express a metabolic pathway for the production of methacrylate esters in yeast. Industrially, this pathway is expressed in E. coli as a renewable alternative for the production of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).
“I’m a generalist, a creator, and a problem solver with an entrepreneurial mindset. The only downside to that is that I’m obsessive about a different issue every other week. Professionally, I want to see myself as an enabler, empowering others to do their best to improve the world we live in. I’m naturally attracted to web technologies for their capacity to quickly develop and scale solutions, and my time at Exponea solidified this feeling. The choice of studying Biotechnology was accidental, yet it turned out to be the most appropriate biological sciences programme I could have chosen. With the domain knowledge in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, and interest in SaaS model, my next steps will be on the interface of the two.
In my free time, I’m a learner, a mentor, a programmer, a runner, a beginning weightlifter, a former videography enthusiast, a master of bad puns, a cat person, an indie/electro fan, and a reckless cook."
