About us

The Institute of Quantitative Biology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology (IQB3) uniquely brings together biophysical, computational, mathematical, analytical, integrative and systems approaches to study life at the molecular, cellular, multicellular and whole-organism levels.

The goal is to develop a deeper, more detailed, data-rich and holistic understanding of complex biological phenomena including synthetic and catabolic pathways, and their regulation, in plants, bacteria, fungi and animals. This fundamental understanding is coupled to ground-breaking technology in chemical and structural biology, proteomics, next-generation imaging and ultrahigh-throughput screening to develop new drug leads and small-molecule tool kits. Using the techniques of synthetic biology, we apply our emerging and increasingly predictive knowledge of living systems to re-engineer biological processes for tackling global challenges in healthcare, renewable energy, the environment, green chemistry and agri-food. The IQB3 incorporates the Centre for Chemical and Translational Biology, the Centre for Integrative Structural Biology, the Centre for Synthetic and Systems Biology (SynthSys) and the new BBSRC, EPSRC and MRC funded UK Centre for Mammalian Synthetic Biology, and has close links with the Wellcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology and the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions.
